Microsoft announced last month that it will be releasing a new AI-powered Microsoft Bing. This will use the much talked about ChatGPT. The goal for Microsoft is to provide a more natural experience than traditional search engines like Google can offer. What's most interesting to me is the proposed ability to provide context to the search engine. For example, the Microsoft press release implies that you can use the improved Bing to make searches like "My parents are coming to town, where should I take them to dinner," and it will return dinner locations your parents might like. This is something no search engine can currently do.

While Google and other traditional search engines have been able to make some contextual connections with the help of machine learning algorithms, it's still difficult for them to replicate the kind of results an AI like GPT-3 could provide. For Google, which relies on the traditional search mechanism to sell advertising, it will need to adapt quickly. Will we see Bing providing brand centric responses? Who controls these? Does someone have to pay for them?

While we await how the search engines are changed it is worth looking at how AI could be used in your business now. Here are some ideas to start considering:

1. Automating customer service enquiries. This goes beyond your simple “chat bot” or having staff available to answer questions.
2. Creating blog articles which you can use across social media and your website. Just let AI know what you want to talk about and let it do the rest.
3. Generate customer surveys using sets of base information you are wanting to discover.
4. Do research and analysis across marketing or product development.
5. Easily perform language translation over large documents.
